I Stand Corrected

After having complained about the lack of autumnal weather, and what appeared to be a fast approaching winter, I must now apologise for my premature judgement. Maybe the weather lord heard me, and took things to the opposite extreme, for the past few days have been a return to scorching summer weather.

Thursday saw me helping out at a golf fund-raiser, and the weather could not have been any better. Perfect temperatures ensured smiles all around, as the sun beat down, but the wind kept things reasonable. Sat outside the clubhouse did get a little hot though, as I had to retreat inside for a little break from the sun. The outing was a great success, with great food served by the golf club, both during the event and after. I also got to drive a golf cart around the course, decking it out with signs, then collecting them in. I had never driven a golf cart before, and I did have fun doing it, zipping across the fairways, and even a little "off-road" in the rough areas. At one point though, I got a little too excited and turned too fast, nearly flinging myself across the passenger seat and out of the other side. It's a little sad I enjoyed driving the cart so much. Simple things, simple minds.

Friday, things got a little hotter, up to the high seventies (that's Fahrenheit, around 25 C) as we walked around knocking on doors up in Algoma, almost in Door County. A drive through the countryside brought us to this quaint little town "up North", located in what I like to call 'the sticky out bit' of Wisconsin, the peninsula which extends into Lake Michigan. Great views overlooking the lake, but terrible cell phone service.

Today temperatures topped 82 (28) and it was another day spent out in the beautiful sun, with not a cloud in the sky. In the morning we stood outside Camp Randall, thankfully in a little shade, encouraging people to vote November 2nd, and preferably vote for Congresswoman Baldwin. I met Tammy, and stood with her and some other volunteers handing out leaflets and stickers. It's all about Getting Out the Vote, as I have said many times. We generally had a good reception, though many people just wanted to get to the game, and cared not about politics. The occasional passer-by bluntly refused to vote for Tammy, or any other Democrat, but most were pleasant. Distributing 'Vote 2010' stickers with Obama's face on, I did hear one shocking story from a fellow volunteer about the number of people who responded to these stickers with the phrase 'Oh Obama is running in 2010, I didn't realise.' Two words, Oh Dear.

The sun stayed strong and bright throughout the day, as I stood amongst 70,000 other red clad people, watching the Badgers play the Minnesota Gophers.. more on that later. Needless to say, with great weather like this, I have hopefully developed a nice little tan. And now, winter seems like a rather distant possibility, as opposed to a soon-to-be likelihood.

Would anyone back home like to trade the British Summer, drizzly and rather chilly, for a Wisconsin Autumn?
